Planned activities

Fun Science Studios plans activities using proportionate risk assessment and practical control measures appropriate to the experiment, venue, age group, participant numbers and delivery format.

Changing an activity

We may substitute, adapt, postpone or stop an experiment where reasonably necessary because of safety, participant needs, space, ventilation, weather, equipment, materials or venue conditions.

No activity is completely risk-free

Hands-on activities naturally involve ordinary risks such as minor spills, splashes or accidental contact with materials. Our role is to identify foreseeable risks and reduce them using sensible precautions.

Nothing on this page excludes responsibility where loss or injury is caused by our negligence, breach of contract or another responsibility that cannot legally be excluded.

Parents and carers stay

A responsible parent or carer must remain throughout every family workshop unless a particular event is expressly advertised as a supervised drop-off activity.

Adults join without an additional workshop charge and are encouraged to help their child follow the practical steps.

Younger children

Children under six may require close one-to-one assistance with pouring, measuring, mixing, building, handling equipment and listening to instructions.

Adult responsibility

Fun Science Studios leads the scientific activities. The accompanying adult remains responsible for their child’s general supervision, behaviour, toileting, personal care and individual medical support.

Siblings and babies

Please contact us before bringing a non-participating sibling or baby. Attendance depends on venue capacity and whether the adult can continue to supervise and support the booked child safely.

Organisational supervision

Teachers, nursery practitioners or responsible organisational staff must remain present and actively supervise throughout the session.

Fun Science Studios staff do not replace the organisation’s usual staffing ratios, safeguarding procedures or individual support arrangements.

Information before the booking

The organisation must provide accurate information about participant numbers, ages, allergies, medical needs, accessibility requirements, additional needs and any relevant behaviour or safety considerations.

Venue-specific assessment

Fun Science Studios assesses the risks arising from its own activities. The school, nursery or organisation remains responsible for its venue, pupils, internal procedures and any organisation-specific assessment required.

Safeguarding information

Relevant DBS, safeguarding and activity documentation for the people delivering an organisational booking can be discussed and provided where appropriate.

Protective equipment

Lab coats, safety goggles, gloves or other protective equipment are provided and used where appropriate to the activity.

Participants must wear the requested equipment correctly and keep it in place until told that it may be removed.

Following instructions

Participants should wait before touching materials, use only the quantity supplied and follow the steps demonstrated by the activity leader.

PPE and sensory needs

Please tell us when a participant may find goggles, gloves, lab coats or particular textures difficult. We will consider a suitable adjustment or alternative where it can be provided safely.

Damaged equipment

Participants should stop using and immediately report any damaged, cracked, uncomfortable or poorly fitting protective equipment.

Suitable clothing

Practical science may involve water, colour, foam, slime, powders, bubbles and other messy materials.

Please wear clothing that is comfortable and not especially delicate or valuable. Lab coats reduce mess but cannot guarantee that clothes will remain completely clean or unstained.

Hair and jewellery

Long hair may need to be tied back. Loose jewellery, scarves or accessories may need to be removed or secured for a particular experiment.

Footwear

Secure and practical footwear is recommended. Running in the activity area is not permitted.

Spillages

Spills must be reported immediately. Participants should keep away from the affected area while it is made safe and should not attempt to clean scientific materials without instruction.

When not to attend

A participant should not attend when significantly unwell, contagious, experiencing vomiting or diarrhoea, or otherwise unable to take part safely.

Please contact us promptly to discuss the applicable transfer or cancellation arrangements.

Feeling unwell during an activity

A child who feels unwell should stop participating and remain with their parent, carer, teacher or responsible organisational adult.

Personal care

Parents, carers and organisational staff remain responsible for toileting, feeding, changing, lifting and other personal care.

Adult health concerns

Adults are welcome to observe rather than handle materials. Please contact us before attending when pregnancy, an allergy, a medical condition or another concern may affect adult participation.

Expected behaviour

Participants must listen to instructions, treat others respectfully, remain within the activity area and use equipment only for its intended purpose.

Unsafe behaviour

Throwing materials, deliberately spilling substances, running, pushing, interfering with equipment or repeatedly ignoring safety instructions is not permitted.

Pausing participation

We may pause an activity, remove equipment or ask a child to sit out temporarily where behaviour creates a safety risk or seriously disrupts other participants.

The supervising adult will be asked to support the child and help decide whether safe participation can resume.

Stopping participation

Where a serious or continuing risk cannot be managed, the participant may be unable to continue the activity. This decision will be made for safety rather than as a punishment.

Food ingredients used for science

Some experiments use familiar food ingredients. Once supplied for an experiment, those ingredients are scientific materials and must not be tasted or eaten unless we clearly state that a particular activity is edible.

Hands away from the face

Participants should avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth while handling materials and should wash their hands when instructed.

Young children

Young children who may put materials or tools into their mouth require close supervision from their accompanying adult.

Separate food area

Food and drinks should not be placed on science tables or next to experiment equipment.

Suitable venue

The venue must be safe, legally available, appropriately ventilated and suitable for the number of participants and agreed activities.

Required tables, chairs, water, electricity, access and protected surfaces must be available as agreed.

Exits and walkways

Fire exits, evacuation routes and walkways must remain clear. Bags, buggies, coats, cables and unused equipment should not obstruct movement.

Venue responsibilities

The venue owner, hirer, school or event organiser remains responsible for the premises, safe capacity, fire procedures, evacuation arrangements and venue-wide first-aid provision.

Our activity responsibilities

Fun Science Studios is responsible for the safe setup, instruction and management of its science equipment and activities.

An incident or emergency

We will stop the activity, make the immediate area safe and seek suitable first-aid or emergency assistance where needed.

Parents, carers, school staff, venue staff or emergency services may be contacted depending on the circumstances. Relevant incidents may be recorded and reviewed.

Weather-dependent activities

Outdoor rockets, water activities, giant bubbles and other outdoor experiments depend on suitable weather and sufficient clear space.

Wind, rain and heat

Activities may be adapted, moved, postponed or replaced because of wind, lightning, heavy rain, extreme heat, cold, poor ground conditions or reduced visibility.

Safe boundaries

Participants and spectators must remain behind any launch, demonstration or equipment boundary and follow instructions about where to stand.

Suitable clothing

The organising adult remains responsible for suitable outdoor clothing, footwear, sun protection and hydration.

Taking something home

Some experiments create an item that may be taken home. This depends on the materials, storage requirements and safety of transporting the finished creation.

Follow the instructions

Any storage, disposal, expiry or adult-supervision instructions provided during the activity must be followed.

Not for consumption

Slime, potions, mixtures, crystals and other scientific creations must not be eaten or given to animals.

Keep away from young children

Take-home materials should be kept securely away from babies, very young children and anyone who may place them in their mouth.

Repeating experiments

Only repeat an activity at home when it is clearly suitable for home use, with responsible adult supervision and the correct materials and instructions.

Schools and organisations

Relevant risk assessments and supporting activity or substance-safety information can be provided for confirmed school, nursery and organisational bookings where appropriate.

Please send procurement, safeguarding or document requirements early enough for them to be prepared and reviewed before the event.
